Index minerals can form at a certain pressure and temperature and appear in this certain order from low temperature to high temperature: Chlorite, biotite, garnet, staurolite, kyanite, and sillimanite.
Millimetresized garnet, kyanite and opaques are associated with ribbons of optically continuous quartz. Kfeldspar, plagioclase and biotite are also present. The last three are mostly finegrained and appear to have partially recrystallized after having been severely strained (the rock may once have been mylonite).
granulites (kyanite garnet leucogneiss and kyanite garnet mica schist), interpreted by Ribeiro et al. (1995) as a product of highpressure metamorphism related to the Brasilia Belt. (Garnet) (hornblende) biotite gneiss occurs in the west part of the area, overlying metasedimentary rocks, probably by thrust faults. Near
Thin section, plane light: Deformed kyanite in kyanitegarnetbiotite schist, Dutchess County, NY (Whitney et al., 1996a, b). Thin section, plane light: Kyanite + quartz inclusions in garnet in a sillimanitebiotite gneiss. Most of the field of view is garnet, with oriented rutile needles. The prominent diagonal lines are cracks.

Metamorphic facies is not obvious in a given field specimen. To sum up, a metamorphic facies is the set of minerals found in a rock of a given composition. That mineral suite is taken as a sign of the pressure and temperature that made it. Here are the typical minerals in rocks that are derived from sediments.

Biotite Zone. Garnet Zone. Staurolite Zone. Kyanite Zone. Silimanite Zone. Depending on the amount of pressure and temperature the area was exposed to, would depend on what group Barrow would place an area in.
Of the two styles of metamorphism, contact and regional, the latter is most often used to argue against the youngearth creationFlood model.
